Taking Care of Yourself

As we are here on Earth, in our totality we are made-up of soul (emotions and intellect), body, and spirit. Experiences originating in one part influence and affect the other parts.  All aspects of our life after salvation and regeneration need to come under the control of our renewed spirit, which needs to be submitted to the Word of God, and under the influence and control of the Holy Spirit.  This includes the way we dress, the way we eat, the way we take care of our earthly homes, and literally every aspect of life.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

2 Corinthians 5:17 New International Version (NIV)

Do not compartmentalize your life into segments of marriage, family, work, activities, and church.  The “spiritual” is not any more important than the “non-spiritual”.

Most commonly Christian literature addresses issues impacting the spirit, and soul only. But in reality, as disciples, we have the responsibility to insure the well-being of soul, spirit, and body. This should be obvious.  Without health, we cannot function in the workplace or within the church. Without dressing modestly, or reasonably fashionably, or with having serious obesity, we cannot be the witness in the world that we are called to be.

In Proverbs, we see the interaction within our human makeup.

Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.

Proverbs 3:7-8 New International Version (NIV)

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.

Proverbs 14:30 New International Version (NIV)

My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body.

Proverbs 4:20-22 New International Version (NIV)

Additionally, physical attractiveness and overall health play a significant role in our marriage relationship. Attractiveness is normally a byproduct of healthy living, and physical health can be a product of our spiritual health. It is recognized that in a number of instances health can be affected by factors that we cannot control. But what is true also, is that healthy persons tend to be more attractive than unhealthy. Health requires eating wholesome food in moderate amounts, exercising regularly; and having periodic medical and dental check-ups insure a life where health and fitness issues are addressed periodically.
